The Nest. . .

We had an afternoon visit to a nearby (literally up the road) school, the VMCGHSS Wandoor. This is the boys' school that is the counterpart to the girls' school where we are teaching. Again, we were met with great fanfare and students lined the entrance lane to the school. Traditional drummers greeted us in the courtyard, flowers were placed around our necks, and a traditional lunch was served. We also were interviewed by the local media and I was able to express just how thankful I was for the warm welcome we've received from Wandoor and the community!

Part of the festivities today included a presentation with local dances and songs, speeches, and music. A highlight was inaugurating The Nest.
What's The Nest, you ask? Well, let me tell you. . .
The Nest is a thatched roof hut that the students made by hand. It's about 8 x10' and is situated near the center courtyard of the school--surrounded by the many buildings where students attend classes. Inside The Nest are benches and several books in English. Any student who is inside The Nest may only speak English (to practice conversational skills).
I think it's a great idea to designate a space where kids can feel safe and know their job is to practice their target language and skills. I hope they enjoy the space. . .it's very peaceful and bright!
