Going back in time

This morning, we visited Riyas' primary school from when he was a boy growing up in Kappil, Kerala. The young students had so much energy and followed us up the path as we walked to the assembly area. They performed a traditional dance (just beautiful--a young solo dancer who was just lovely!) and had a drummer. They also had fireworks for us! We were honored to plant trees in their courtyard and were offered tender coconuts to drink.

The design above was made with flowers and flower petals and we were asked to light the oil lamp. Just as we finished lighting the lamp, it began to rain. Since this is monsoon season and we haven't seen much rain yet, the children began to cheer and chant! The monsoon rains are what determine their water levels and vegetation for the next season, so fresh water is very important. Great ending to a pretty intense morning (those little kids can get reeeeeaaaaally excited)!
